The Advantages of Glued-Laminated Cedar

 

Les jeux modul'Air is breaking new grounds by launching on the market, for 2012, playsets built with beams and posts made of glued-laminated cedar. It is very difficult to dry 4X4 inch beams or more in special ovens without incurring significant losses in the product. Les jeux modul'Air has therefore come up with an existing technology which allows us to produce pieces of wood using thinner oven pre-dried pieces. These pieces of wood are then glued one on top of the other making sure that all wood fibers are parallel to each other. The product used for gluing is much more resistant than natural wood fiber, so there is no risk for the pieces to come apart.

 

There are many advantages to use glued-laminated wood. This technology was invented a long time ago to make huge wood pieces and wood pieces with a particular shape. This glued-laminated technology gives pieces of wood a great stability and prevents it from bending, splitting, and warping. Glued-laminated wood is really resistant to climate changes and may be used outside as well as inside.
Big pieces of wood are liable to split during the dry-up period outside, but these splits are never damaging in any way and they do not weaken the structures at all. The use of glued-laminated cedar by Les jeux modul'Air eliminates this small aesthetic problem, because the wooden beams and posts are manufactured with oven pre-dried pieces.

 

There are playsets on the market that are manufactured with beams and posts made of plasticized wood. This plasticizing process makes it possible to hide the drying splits and to use types of wood that are less resistant outside and often of lesser quality because the faults are camouflaged. This process eliminates the need to maintain the wood, but we have to keep one important thing in mind, it prevents the wood's ability to breathe, so its lifetime is reduced.

 

Pine and spruce do not have a long lifetime when outside, so can you imagine what happens if this type of wood is plasticized. In the long run, this technology could be dangerous to use on playsets, due to the fact that we have no way of checking if the wooden beams are still in good conditions because of this plastic coat hiding the defects and consequently the rotten wood!
